Received an email from my friend Michael Neiger, Lead Investigator, Special Operations Group, MibSAR to say that he had come across a great review of my book in the 'American Search & Rescue Dog News' - happy days.

It reminded me of my time working with the incredible Adela Morris, founder of http://www.k9forensic.org/ an organisation that has pioneered the use of dogs to detect people, on a massive NASA complex in a simulated town post-earthquake. A remarkable woman doing remarkable work.

Sat at work this morning reading the most recent issue of Navigation News, from The Royal Institute of Navigation, and read that you are to be awarded their Certificate of Achievement

‘In recognition of his outstanding achievement in writing the Ultimate Navigation Manual, a comprehensive book for Land Navigation’

So you will be meeting Royalty then  :)

Well done Lyle, it is deserved.

Yes, it came completely out of the blue when Peter Chapman Andrews, the Director of Royal Institute of Navigation, called me. At first I thought it was one of Ran Fienne's calls, but luckily I cottoned on, so was courteous and polite throughout the conversation ;)

I am afraid Prince William will have to forgo meeting me, as I will be on holiday in Devon :)

A few years ago had lunch with his Grand Father and sat next to his Uncle Andrew, who served in the Falklands to his credit, where he co-piloted a Sea King and came under missile attack aboard HMS Invincible.

I missed Pete's McK's post on 18th June (clearly I am not paying enough attention!) - and you're right Pete it was good work. Lyle delivered some really excellent training to our guys and gals of Suffolk Lowland SAR - a brilliant weekend that we all enjoyed greatly! Thank you is not enough Lyle - it was superb!

Deserved  :) your book is by far the best available and most certainly has made a very positive change to our enjoyment of the outdoors.

I have not seen Navigation News Magazine before Callum, is it one worth seeking out?

Thanks for sending me the back issues Callum. I thought that I would post my impressions here for other forum members.

Some of the magazine, especially when discussing GNSS, was really at an advanced level encompassing maritime and aviation navigation, such as no-fly zones for areas surrounding the Olympic Games, and whilst interesting, are not really relevant to our recreational land navigation needs.

I guess the interesting part for me was that there is a highly credible and well informed authority, responsible for many navigational matters which could affect recreational land navigators, which no one seems to have heard of – certainly none of the walking group we belong to or my colleagues at school.

I know you said to bin the issues (3 of) when I had read them, but if any other forum members would like them, I am happy to forwardthem on, just PM me.

Came home to the smart certificate from the Royal Institute of Navigation, to hang on my wall, and a letter that had been forwarded on to me by the Editor of Trail Magazine.

The letter is from Mr M. Millington, who is a retired gentleman, had taken the time to write to Trail Magazine and thank them for helping him get to grips with his eTrex, that had sat in the drawer for years, in an article “written for everybody, who is not a whizz kid with this type of technology”.

I suspect the certificate may not end up on my wall, not because I am not appreciative of the institutions acknowledgement, but the letter means more to me :)

Great audience at ROK, with local teams represented, such as Patterdale MRT to as far afield as Surrey LSAR. These folk had made a big effort to attend so I extended my usual introduction to satnav to include the use of satnav in EMP, specifically flooding, from my experience whilst working in Pakistan, and for responders working by swift water.

Lyle, I met a friend yesterday, who is a member of Patterdale Mountain Rescue and had attended your talk. He told me that you go into much greater detail about using satnav than in your book, any chance of you posting it here or somewhere on the site?

PS He said it was really good :)

Cal, Tuesday seminar was detailing the use of satnavs after major floods and for search beside swift water, where the data provided from them is both used by the responder and the search managers. I developed many of the specialist techniques whilst working in Pakistan after their major floods of 2010.

It is technical stuff and requires a great deal of understanding, both of how SAR teams operate and search management, which I fear may be too specific for this forum. Plus, presentation is a lecture that is only augmented with slides, and as such I do not have a written article.

I don’t sound like I am being very helpful, forgive me. Maybe it would be of interest if I contact Mountain Rescue Magazine, the UK’s best MR publication, and ask if I can reproduce the articles I write for each issue here on this website.

Valid points and totally accepted Lyle.

I personally like to try and take my understanding all things navigation to a greater level, and therefore would appreciate it if you could publish the articles that you write for Mountain Rescue Magazine on this forum. I know that from the postings by Adi, Chris and Ivo, on weather systems, it has definitely taken both my interest and understanding to a new level.
