New Member Introductions / Re: Change in the Earth's magnetic position.

Good to see that there's still a bit of traffic on this forum.

Magnetic Declaration is constantly changes, albeit at a calculable rate. If your journeying over relatively short distances the declaration doesn't create such an error. Declaration obviously becomes a much more significant factored over longer distances.

I always try to calculates the factored in, but with changes of less than a degree this isn't so practicable on a day to day basis.

Some interesting info here:

General navigational Kit / Re: Marking Harveys Maps

Hi,  Thanks for that, not a bad idea, I'll have a look at that. I like the details on Harveys Maps but they are difficult to annotate.

Hi, Happy Holiday.

Harveys Maps are a very good British made maps system that use their own details and data to produce maps aimed specifically at walkers and climbers in the UK. As such they are a very good product for use in UK mountain areas in additionally to regular OS maps.

Harveys use a very good waterproof paper which has the feel and texture of paper but is very tough and waterproof, as such chinagraph and lumocolour don't work very well, If you apply any alcohol to erase them it degrades the paper and lifts the print.

I've always used a softened pencils on OS maps, a hangover to my days of marking nautical charts, but I was looking at workable option to allowance colour marking/ notation on Harveys Maps.

I'll continue my resource and report back in due course.

General navigational Kit / Marking Harveys Maps

Harveys Maps are obviously a great product and maps that I get a great deal of use from.

What is the best product to mark them with?

Regular graphite pencils are fine, chinagraph pencils don't erase very well without amazing the paper, and lumograph pens not at all in my experience.

Anybody use anything elsewhere?

Hi,,
I'm planning a winter trip to Lapland next year and I'm interested to hear of any experiences you may have with the Swedish and Finnish mapping systems.
Thanks

That's good news, over reliance upon electronic and digital systems undoubtedly leads to de-skiling in traditional methods. I trained as a maritime navigator some thirty years ago and whilst I don't work at sea any longer still try and maintain my technique with a sextant however I can't say that I use logarithmic tables much these days:-)

General navigational Kit / Re: Altimeters

I spend a lot of time in the hills in the UK and find that a gps combined with good map and compass skills negates my need for an altimeter.
I also visit higher mountain areas during the year, Mountaineering and ski touring. Again, the improvements in gps technology over the years has found me needing my altimeter less and less.
Thinking about it, the skill of using a barometric altimeter is probably worthwhile maintaining.

Having used my Pussers foam mat until it fell apart I went and bought a thermarest self inflating mat. As I've got older I have definitely come to appreciate the comfort provided by the self inflating mats. For lighter trips I have a 3\4 length 'Lite' mat which packs up very small and is long enough for my torso and backside. The good quality foam mats are also very good but I have to say that I'm a convert to the self inflating mats nowadays.

Hi All,

I'm new to the site but with a keen interest in navigation and being outdoors that ha stayed with me throughout my life.

Professionally, my career as a navigator started at sea, training as a Navigation Officer and thereafter a hydrographic surveyor. After a few years at sea and university I decided to put my skills to good use (not..) and become a Police Officer. Twenty five years later I still maintain a passion for being outdoors and the essential art of navigation as a keen hillwalkier, cyclist and ski tourer. Originally from West Wales, now resident in the North West UK I try and take any opportunity to get outside, currently trying to impart the basics of map and compass work to my ten year old children who, at the moment, couldn't be less interested!

I'm looking forward to learning new skills and updating old ones.
