Maps / Re: Maps Northern Sweden and Finland
« on: December 23, 2015, 08:29:25 PM »
Sweden has free digital mapping at http://kso.lantmateriet.se and you can create PDFs.

Paper maps in the mountain regions of Lapland are mostly 1:100000. The grid ref is SWEREF99.

Finland has free digital data so maps for mapping applications is usually inexpensive, apart from that I have no knowledge of Finnish maps.

@captain, great tip! *downloading immediately*

Hi,

One method would be to use a service like https://www.earthpoint.us/ExcelToKml.aspx or http://www.mapsdata.co.uk/online-file-converter/ to convert your list of coordinates to a KML file, then open Garmin Basecamp and import the KML file with File -> Import.

Then you use the transfer function in Basecamp to get the waypoints into your GPS.

Beautiful. The Everest part reminds me of the zoomable image that floated around the 'net a couple of years ago

Hugh,

That is +15C. I have noticed that performance is affected already at temperatures below room temperature to become really bad when nearing or passing below zero and I wonder if any brand is better than others regarding outdoor temperatures.

Obviously non-rechargeable lithium batteries are a must in really cold temperatures, but do any rechargeable NiMH AA batteries stand out as better than others when the temperature starts dropping below 15 degrees?

A new kickstarter project for a new signalling device has launched.

I'm not sure it is worth carrying if you already have a PLB, but it might be useful as an alternative / complement to flares if you own a boat.

General navigational Kit / Re: Altimeters
« on: November 17, 2014, 11:02:37 AM »
Hugh,

My only experience from altimeters is a five year old Suunto which had bad GPS-reception and poor altimeter which gave me very varying distance and elevation data on the same route. It didn't instill any confidence for using the altimeter for any purpose except perhaps to detect a change in the weather.

I will be getting an iPhone 6 in a few weeks time which has a built in barometric sensor, I am looking forward to see how well it performs and I will report back when I've tried it.

@captain paranoia: What about the Jetboil Joule? It has the canister upside down, and it is placed under the burner. Looks like it might deliver decent cold weather performance.

Of course, once winter comes, I will probably need something different.

@Angle Of Repose, Primus have announced a new canister and mixture which is said to improve winter performance.

Callum,

Thanks for the tip, but I'm afraid the link is to a file on your local hard disk.

Here is an alternate link:

And the page announcing the publication (including a pair of videos):

Best Places to Buy / Mountain Hardware waterproof rucksacks
« on: August 13, 2014, 10:27:46 AM »
I'd like to add Mountain Hardware to the list of manufacturers with waterproof rucksacks. Their OutDry models use a waterproof inner membrane making them look and feel the same as normal rucksacks.
