Archie, I forgot (senior moment) to mention that when I climbed aboard it was for exactly the same reason you stated and I was 76 years old. Lyle and the guys are experts. Watch Lyle's video on the Garmin and you'll then know it all.

Hello Wayne and welcome from Albany, New York. I'd like to say hello again to all on the forum, I've been away for a while, Margie and I have had a couple of mountains to climb (two open heart surgeries for Margie on her aorta) but don't we all have our own mountains to climb? Looks like all of you are doing well with your mountain climbing, it's good to be back!

Jester, thanks for allowing me the opportunity to take this journey with you from my kitchen table. The report and pictures placed me next to you guys every step of the way. Your country is absolutely  beautiful! One of the best things that has happened to me in many years is joining this forum and "seeing the world" with all of you from my home. The other plus is I'm accompanied by Margie, I never have to leave her!

Maps / Re: This video is the best I have seen on maps!!!

The first impression I got watching this is that it has a high entertainment value which make watching and learning enticing and enjoyable. Also, it is the best video on the subject of maps I've seen.

Lyle, thanks for the quick response. Regarding my local accuracy results this is what I do: after I get a UTM coordinates either from the field or from the map using the 1,000 meter tool, I match the coordinate to either the map or my etrex and to check accuracy I then get the compass bearing from the satnav and/or compass and verify each to each other. I'm never more than 2 or 3 degrees off usually less like 1 degree or within only several meters. The etrex H is a really great basic satnav!!! Every time Margie and I go out in the car I take my receiver with me and mark several waypoints and plot them when I get home. Last week I gave the etrex to my grandson whenever he went out and asked him to mark random waypoints and then I'd plot them on my map never leaving my kitchen table, yet I've take many field trips. I love it!!!!!!!!!!

Great report Lyle. I have several questions though, first what does BDS stand for and, how will our satnavs communicate back to the system? Lyle will our present satnavs be useful with all of these systems or will we be required to purchase new satnavs?

Satnav (GPS GLONASS COMPASS Galileo) / Re: GPS Video
« on: June 07, 2013, 02:52:24 PM »
In America GIGO is spelled SISO, or S__t In.....S__t Out. It all means the same. This topic reminds of something I think Lyle said once somewhere that these GPS system and 21st century stuff still needs to be backed up by map and compass and a good working knowledge of how both work together. "Well worth knowing" someone once said.

Peter, the only language I read, write and speak is American English and to be even more specific New York English, which is different than any other English. And, I think your doing great and where there is little differences those differences should stay because it's those difference that are exciting and gives one the feeling of reaching out and closing gaps between us! Keep being who and what you are, don't change a thing.
