But, and there's a good chance you had not noticed that, this here is also "the path". There's more than 20 cm water on it, over a length of more than hundred meters...

Over the last few weeks we've had a lot of precipitation, so one expects a lot of water out there. But this much? These pictures are taken not so far from where I live, while hiking last Saturday. Admitted, the area is called "riverland", but still...

I am convinced it is the layer of hardened Tec7 that causes the disturbance. I believe that the attempt to repair the unit could not have disturbed anything.

Trip reports / Walking with colleagues

Last year (2013) a hiking colleague and I had prepared a simple walk, and we sent an open invitation to all our colleagues to do this walk together -- as some kind of social/team event. We were surprised about the number of colleagues that actually joined us, and several of them suggested to repeat the initiative in 2014. And, even more surprisingly, many said they were in for a "more sportive" walk.
So this summer (2014) we prepared a one-day hike in the Ardennes. It is a rather adventurous hike, one I would recommend to anyone who likes hiking and navigating. It includes several more technical passages: a bit of scrambling, crossing a river, longer stretches where you must navigate, away from the paths.
Since we wanted to do this hike during the summer months, and with several colleagues on holidays, we set two dates rather than just one. In our open invitation to all colleagues, we made sure to mention all the attention points, because we wanted to avoid that people would get "stuck" in the middle of nowhere. As a result we were 9 for the first session and 6 for the second.
We enjoyed these two saturdays, and from the feedback we got I am sure the colleagues enjoyed it as well. Here-below links to the albums of the two sessions:

This post is slightly off-topic. Related to "wear on a Garmin product" as well, but not caused by sunscreen. The lesson learned might be useful though.
I used a Garmin eTrex HCx for years. One of the known weak points of that unit is the rubber band that covers the complete side of the unit. After having used it several times in bright sunlight, the glue which should keep the rubber band in place, became liquid. As an obvious consequence, the rubber band did not stay "in place", and it became very difficult to use the buttons (because the buttons are in fact operated by small bumps located on the rubber band).
After a few Google sessions, it became clear that this was a very frequent problem with the eTrex H family of units. Several owners who had sent their unit to Garmin for reparation (long waiting times, not cheap either), complained that the repaired units had exactly the same weakness!
So I carefully removed the rubber band myself, cleaned the semi-liquid glue from the unit, and repaired it by using a thin layer of Tec7. If you have ever used Tec7, you will not be surprised that the rubber band never loosened again. BUT... that layer of Tec7, however thin it was, clearly disturbed the GNSS signal reception of the unit. It's original "location accuracy" was gone, and it never came back

Are both maps the same scale? I've had several times the following experience: a newer topo, scale 1:50K, did NOT show a narrow path which WAS shown on an older 1:25K topo. So age (of the topo) is not the only parameter.

Speaking for myself, there is certainly no lack of interest Hugh. But I observe (in my own behavior) that a decreasing number of posts impacts the number of times I come to visit the forum. It's been a week since my previous visit here -- so I could not have reacted to your post yet.
Speaking about it... what I have often wondered (and I cannot remember a discussion on that topic), is the accuracy of the topomaps themselves. Their contour lines for example, how accurate are they? Isn't their accuracy (in general) at least as bad as the accuracy of the instruments we tend to rely on?
