But, if you are in a place that is an hour in advance of Zone Standard Time, allow for that, and also allow for the difference in Longitude between actual place & the longitude used for Standard Time. Plus Four minutes per degree of Longitude West, Less if East.,

Variations of Existing Techniques / crosses in Spain for orientation
« on: March 16, 2015, 01:39:48 PM »
Into my fourth week in Andalucía, I have noticed that crosses on steeples and monuments tend to face east-west,which lets them double as noon marks; I intend to be in the UK by August. Cheers

General Discussion / Re: The Water Myth

On snakebite: the tourniquet is handy in case of amputation, otherwise, apply to neck of the person who suggested it. The pressure bandage, http://www.health.qld.gov.au/poisonsinformationcentre/bites_stings/bs_pressure.asp which restricts the flow of lymph, is standard treatment in Australia. Apply directly to wound and limb above bite. Running around is not going to help. Most snakes in Australia tend to head the other way when approached, unless cornered or some fool attempts to kill or capture. I recommend that one do a First Aid Course, to be up on the latest methods.
On water: I drink before setting out, especially soon after rising; this is then followed up with a good drink, as required, To sip is to become dehydrated. Water quality in NSW is excellent, even from streams in wilderness areas.

Ian,walking poles are tipped with Titanium Carbide, so little risk of sparks; & yes, they do poke holes in turf & scratch rock. I use a wooden pole with a rubber tip.

I find that when I talk of finding direction without a compass, most so-called educated folk begin to babble about 'GPS', which I find intensely annoying & stupid. They have no idea.

My pet hate is"This is reversed in the Southern Hemisphere", referencing to things rising in the east & setting in the west. If so, what is the state of affairs on the equator?  Hobbo@, here is a link to Helmer Aslaksen's work,as mentioned in the link that you gave, http://www.math.nus.edu.sg/aslaksen/

General Discussion / Re: Will this change the way we read?
« on: March 19, 2014, 12:08:21 AM »
Anyone who thinks that they got it all by speed-reading a text is in La La Land. Rereading at a later date reveals all sorts of missed data. It is fine, if one is looking for particular info, but risky for new information. Also, if it is poorly written, it is not worth reading.

See the green dots in image. US has either very dirty water or poor camp hygiene. :o

New Techniques & Learning / Re: Navigation accuracy
« on: February 12, 2014, 12:35:32 PM »
What I did was to use Google  Earth/Maps to measure the length of some local town streets, from building corner to building corner; as these turned out to be of equal distance apart, I happily set off, & worked my measure out within two hours. Works just as good for any stretch of road or point-to-point, off road. We drag our feet as the distance increases.
