Mnemonics
« on: November 23, 2011, 02:03:08 AM »
A very useful mnemonic for locating your position: DDCRAPS.
Direction- Establish NSWE, orientate your map.
Distance- How long have I travelled since my last confirmed position?
Conventional signs- can I see anything which would be represented by a conventional sign on the map?
Relief- What type of ground am I near, and how would this be shown on the map?
Alignment- Can I see two or more features which align to indicate a particular direction in relation to my position?
Proximity- Am I near/ Are there features nearby my position which I can locate on the map?
Shape- Does any feature have a distinctive shape which will help me locate it on the map?

I learned this with the army and it is a very effective way of helping to guide you when trying to establish your position.

grid bearing to magnetic you add declination
magnetic bearing to grid bearing you take it away!!

Hi
Similar one for terrain/feature identification
Shape
Orientation
Size
Elevation
Slope [contours]
I'm always disorientated...its just the degree that varies!

grid to mag=add
mag to grid =get rid

grid bearing to magnetic you add declination
magnetic bearing to grid bearing you take it away!!
But only where magnetic north is west of grid north. If GMA is east of grid north it becomes:
Grid to mag- get rid
mag to grid-add

I'm sure I have a map at home which straddles the dividing line, on one side of the sheet the GMA is west, on the other it is east. Makes resections interesting. :o

Hi
The GMA at the false origin of the OS grid is Easterly, and at the current rate of change, areas of cornwall will be easterly in about 2 years see
http://www.geomag.bgs.ac.uk/data_service/models_compass/gma_calc.html
The magnetic declination calculator on the Main Website-Resource Centre, needs a tweek to the programming! as you move the curser towards the false origin the value approaches zero then increases, but the sign ie west/east still indicates west, which is incorrect

The  5 W's before you set off!

Where are we now ? (fix your position correctly & GPS waypoint)

What time will it take?

Where are we going (Attack point, feature)

What will we see on the way ? (Waypoints, observation)

What will we see if we go too far ?(Slope, Catching feature etc.)

I always tell people that I'm training, the key to success is CRAP.

Consistent
Repetitive
Accurate
Practice

In everything they do navigation wise.

Bob (Egg), could not help but remember your acronym and must say it worked a treat :)

Also liked Add for Mag, Rid for Grid - it just seemed to stick with us.

My old boss used to use KISS, but he told us it meant Keep It Simple Stupid - maybe he was telling me something - although now I am the boss and I use it with my colleagues!

For the youngsters completely new to navigation we use -

Never Eat Shredded Wheat

And when sea kayaking we use -

Is there any port left?

Red Right Returning (When navigating between a red and green channel marker pair, keep the red marker to starboard when returning to the harbour from the sea.)

LURD or DRUL

Using to sky [Sun, Moon, Stars] to orient oneself & a map, without a compass.
Another Rotation Effect

If the sky move so, one faces thus:

Left NORTH
Up; EAST
Right SOUTH
Down. WEST

Keeping Track of where Here is in relation to There.
