Yesterday I was shown an app that I initially thought was only available to government agencies, it is in fact commercially available.

By simply pointing your phones camera at any plane in the sky this app reveals its flight number, origin and destination, speed, altitude and distance.

The website that I refered to in the UNM Environmental Navigation Section has created this remarkable little app.

wow my daughter is a bit of a plane spotter so i reckon she will like that

Totally agree Adi and have an idea which I would like to run past you.

For the type of severe weather tracking you are involved in, where these events are mapped dynamically using GIS, could this be integrated into an app like this, where the users effectively become data sources?
