In the Lake District, where I work, play and live, I have pretty well sussed all of the mountain and hill peaks and can identify and name them. But in areas I frequently visit but don’t know so well, such as the Cairngorms, I am often caught out, and in Alpine regions, other than the iconic mountain peaks, it is always a case of taking a bearing from my location and when back at base looking on the large scale map to find out what peak I had been looking at – because the sheets I am carrying often do now cover such vast distances.
Using what I guess is the same technology at the plane spotter is a brilliant app I have recently been using called peaks.augmented-outdoors.com My hard won skill is now obsolete as I simply point my Smartphone camera at the ridge and the peaks all are named plus individual altitudes and even the distance from you is given.
