This program turns your smartphone into a guidebook. Like the apps Cal and Lyle have described, it uses the phones inbuilt camera. By simply pointing your camera at an interesting building the display will bring up a label with its name and a brief description. Tap name and fuller details and history are displayed.

Bought this and Pete’s recommendation ‘Nearest Wiki’ to test in the United States this week.

These apps are effectively information portals in AR (Augmented Reality). I referred to AR in the UNM with SVT for handheld satnavs. Earlier this year I used a beta model employing SVT for the first time, and believe that when they are fully developed and commercially available they will be the next paradigm shift in this technology.

Hmm, I think I recognise the core recognition technology they might be using on this - www.mobileacuity.com  ....just for my own interest, I'll ask!
