Not sure if any of you are aware of Kahtoola Micro Spikes.

Whilst they have been designed for use in snow and ice I was using them to great effect on the steep, slippery muddy paths on the South Downs yesterday.

I was delivering a talk in the Peak District and my wife had accompanied me to stay on over the weekend and whilst she had brought boots, she had not packed crampons. We were not planning any epics, instead a walk along a disused railway track, however the snow and ice made this prohibitive in just walking boots. Bought a pair of these, or very similar, in Cotswold, which with my MR discount set me back £12 – excellent value and great little invention.

Since this winter I use YakTrax, and I am really satisfied about their effectiveness.
