I feel that this is a dead end street: too many complex structures to remain stable. meanwhile, Android are coming up with the " Gyrocompass App that,fromall reports, tells us magnetic North! http://www.androidpit.com/en/android/market/apps/app/fi.finwe.gyrocompass/3D-Gyro-Compass

Spyglass and Commander Compass (possibly also Lite version) for iOS can be configured to show magnetic or true north.
