I feel that this is a dead end street: too many complex structures to remain stable. meanwhile, Android are coming up with the " Gyrocompass App that,fromall reports, tells us magnetic North!

Spyglass and Commander Compass (possibly also Lite version) for iOS can be configured to show magnetic or true north.
