UTM and Garmin Etrex
« on: June 20, 2014, 10:42:29 AM »
Hi
I'm using a Garmin Etrex 10 and want, for the first time, to use the Universal Transverse Mercator datum. The UTM reading on my Garmin shows (a) on the Satellite screen, a 7 figure number for the Easting – 0520612;and (b) on the Trip Computer screen, a six-figure number for the Easting - 052061. Has the last figure, the "2" been dropped intentionally? If so, why not drop it on the Satellite screen also? Can anyone explain what's happening, please? Thanks. Andy

Sounds like a bug on your satnav to me Andy. Have you used  Garmin WebUpdater to check your Etrex 10 has the latest software? Might also be worth contacting them direct - Freephone from UK landline: 0808 238 0000

Hi Andy,

What I always found strange in the first place, is that Garmin eTrex displays a seven-digit figure for the easting (while UTM easting values are never above about 833000), but indeed it does.

My eTrex 20 is configured to display the UTM coordinates on the map screen. It shows the same 7 digits as the satellite screen. When I configure the Trip Computer screen to display the location (in the topmost, large datafield), that too shows exactly the same seven digits. But I must mention that I have changed the "dashboard" setting of my Trip Computer to display "Large data fields" (I have not tried to reconfigure it to small datafields).

I have the latest firmware version running on my eTrex.

Best regards,
Chris.

Thanks, Pete and Chris. I've changed the Trip Computer screen to large numbers (also omitting some of the info I don't need) and, yes, the UTM Easting is now a 7 figure number beginning with 0. Thanks for your help. Andy
