Garmin 650 Go To Error Message
« on: June 25, 2014, 08:34:50 AM »
Hi folks.  Wondering if anyone can assist with an issue I've got with my Garmin Oregon 650?  I'm working in northern Iraq/Kurdistan & I keep getting this problem whenever I try any sort of "Go to" function:  "route calculation error: maps do not have routable roads in this area".  I'm not trying to use roads & use it in the mountains.

I've tried everything that comes to mind (disabled maps one by one, gone through all the settings, restored defaults, even reinstalled the software) but nothing seems to change.  Waiting for Garmin to reply & from a Google search it's clear that I'm not alone in this but can't seem to find a solution.

Any thoughts, no matter how daft, would be appreciated.

Hi Joel,

Although I do not know the Oregon that well, I bet that there is a setting which controls the way your satnav will calculate the route to destination. And in that setting you can (I keep on betting here) select something like "direct routing" -- maybe called differently, but meaning that your satnav just shows you the direction to follow to go to your destination in a straight line.

Now the setting in question might well be dependent on the "Profile" and/or on the "Activity type" that you have selected. At any rate, Garmin will probably have hidden it very well in a menu where you would not expect it...

My assumption is, that your satnav wants to calculate the route to destination "via a certain type of roads (like for cars, bikes, or hiking trails)", and that the routing information is not present in the map(s) you are using.

Good Luck,
Chris.

Sorry, Chris: realise I never replied which was a bit inconsiderate of me, especially as you led me in the right direction!!  Cheers for that.
