Publicity
« on: September 28, 2011, 02:15:06 PM »
Lyle,  I saw you mention you were getting calls about general publicity, TV etc - please let us know whats due when, &  if you are doing any "roadshows" etc.  I've seen the "product of the month" in Novembers Trail mag, so the word is out!

Here’s fine for me & others using the Forum, but don’t be shy - You have worked so hard on it for so long, so stick it on your home page where everyone can see it easily!

I'm sure you are going to get lots of rave reviews.  I admit I’ve not read all books on navigation, nor am I an expert on the subject (yet :D), but you cover more than the others I've read, in a readable & practical way.  So words like "definitive text" will no doubt be coming your way.

Yes, I will speak with Steve (Ace web-designer) about having a page of diary events, news, updates etc. There is genuinely so much happening, anyway for the time being:

Most immediate is this weekend I am presenting at the UK ALSAR Conference 2011 in Newport Pagnell.

The Association of Lowland Search and Rescue (ALSAR) is a terrific charitable organisation, with over around 1000 trained Search Technicians, all of whom are volunteers, similar to UK Mountain Rescue responders. They provide lifesaving search and rescue operations to assist the emergency services in the search for missing persons and ALSAR's role is to coordinate arrangements for Search & Rescue services in the Lowland areas of the United Kingdom.

The following weekend I am at the Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival and will post details of this on the link that Steve creates.

Tomorrow (Wed 19102011) I will be with a couple of fellow MRT team members, plus Alpha & Bravo, the new team Land-Rovers, for a photo-shoot and some off-road driving for a magazine.

Looking forward to it as we have had monsoon weather!

You have all the fun at work, Of road driving in monsoon mud. All I have to look forward to is teaching a first aid course to 12, 20 something stable girls dressed in nice tight Jodhpurs next month!

Oh I can't wait to teach the secondary assessment!  :P

Have a day with a photographer from a big daily national newspaper at St abb's Head today and luckily bright sunshine and crisp winter air.

St Abbs, (photo P92) is a stunning place and was where I perfected cliff aspect. I have so many stories about the place and encourage everyone to visit, when I am not so busy next week I will post a few starting with climbing a sea stack to pick some Pinks, a fabulous and hardy little flower that grows by the sea, for my loved one and getting covered in Fulmar cr*p!

Publicity Update 06012012
« Reply #8 on: January 06, 2012, 04:16:39 AM »
There are five big articles to be published soon :)

In three instances the magazines have asked that I do not reveal the details until the articles are published. It appears that competition is fierce in the specialist magazine world and since scoops are rare the angle taken on a story becomes central.

  • Mountain Rescue Magazine is the excellent quarterly that is distributed to all MR Teams in England and Wales and this month, in addition to a great review, I have written an article about a specialist navigational technique adapted for mountain rescue.
  • CasBag, the Scottish equivalent of the aforementioned Mountain Rescue Magazine, I am informed have a good review of the book this month too.
  • This month I am spending a couple of days with a journalist and photographer from a very well known countryside magazine navigating in the Southern Uplands.
  • Another well known outdoors magazine have asked me to write a special series of articles, with an unusual perspective, to be published over several consecutive months
  • Lastly I am also featured in a Land-Rover enthusiast’s magazine in another story with a different take in a six page feature.

Immediately these articles are published I will post copies on this site.

The TV production company who approached me last year are keen to progress their idea with a view to start filming later this year.

Lastly, two BBC TV programs are still discussing features with me for this Spring.

Sat in the dentists waiting room yesterday and sifting through the golf magazine and Hello and managed to find this month’s copy of Adventure Travel – a great magazine which whenever I read it inspires me to broaden my horizons and travel further afield. Came across another article that maybe you have not seen yet Lyle, it is a really good review with the opening sentence "This book defines the word 'comprehensive' - it's got everything you could think of to do with navigation, lots of stuff you'd never think of, and more!"

The other good news is check up was all clear as I don’t think I can afford any dental work :)

Just received newest issue of Land Rover Owner International only to find our beloved author stood next to some very special Land-Rovers ;) Taking a modified 130 over an off-road assault course must be interesting to say the least!

Seriously, well done to you and all those who dedicate their time to mountain rescue. I know that it reassures me every time I am out on the hill that there are well trained team members who are prepared to help me if I or my party run into trouble, especially they turn up in a Landy like those featured.

Next month's Trail Magazine (April - out next week) there is the first part of a major three-part series on navigation I have written for them plus the 12 videos I shot are going to be uploaded onto the website www.lfto.co.uk

In this months Land-Rover Owner International there is a feature about the MRT I am a member of and the new vehicles we are using.

Latest edition of Trail dropped through the letterbox this morning.
Part 1 of Lyle's navigation series looks great.
Will be interesting to see how it goes down with the readers.
