An important correction!
It was only on the first day of walking, which commenced at 1600, that I drank 500 mils of water. On other days I drank much more but nothing like the amount that Austin consumed.

Sorry Hugh I miss read your post. But it does not surprise me that your experience meant your food intake and water intake was a lot less. When I first joined the cycling team my energy use, water intake and food intake was around 60% higher than the cyclists with years of experience.
