A military satnav jamming exercise is to take place at RAF Spadeadam in Cumbria.

The jammers will be located within 5km of N55° 04.000’, W002° 34.000’. (NY638742) and be active between 21st May to 1st June 2012 inclusive, between 0700 BST and 2000 GMT.

It is a land based multiple jammer exercise centred around 1575.42MHz, which is the L1 carrier that civilian satnavs employ.

The proposed wattage (10 Watts EIRP) is quite high so it may well extend beyond.

A large military satnav jamming exercise is to take place in Wales at the Sennybridge Training area, which lies just outside the Brecon Beacon National Park to the north west of the county town of Brecon.

The jammers will be located within 5km of N52° 00.881’ W003° 38.518’ (SN873365) and be active between 11–15, 18-22, and 25-29 June 2012 inclusive, between 0900 BST and 1800 BST.

Whilst multiple frequencies will be tested, the L1 carrier, the one civilian satnavs employ, will be affected.

Most of this area is restricted, as it is used for artillery and infantry training, however, the proposed wattage for the jamming is quite high so it may well extend beyond.

As always, carry alternative navigastional equipment if your are there, not just during these specified times, BUT at any time

Again, at RAF Spadeadam in Cumbria, land based multiple jamming tests are going to be conducted within 5km of N55° 04.000’ W002° 34.000’ between 9th and 20th April 2012 inclusive (weekdays only) between 0700 - 1800 GMT on the civilan broadcast L1* – this includes car and handheld satnavs.

* L1 is broadcast on (1575.42 MHz) that contains the course acquisition signal used by all current GPS users. Isuspect thatpart of these trials willalso be testing the jamming of a new broadcast called L1C, this uses the same frequency, as does L2, which will be available sometime in 2014 that enables greater civil interoperability with Galileo & GLONASS.

One of the largest satnav jamming exercises to take place in the UK is planned and will have two centres on the north and west coasts of Scotland.

There will be multiple jammers will be located from:

1.   Within a radius of 35 miles of Faraid Head 58-36N 004-46W.
2.    The Little Minch and North Minch northwards from Waternish Point 57-36N 006-38W to Stoer Head  58-14N 005-24W, including Sound of Raasay and Inner Sound

It is a land based multiple jammer exercise centred around 1575.42MHz, which is the L1 carrier that civilian satnavs employ, and will affect hundreds of square miles.

Intermittent for 1hr slots between 0800BST and 2130BST between 16-26 April 2012.

This operation is so large that a Dedicated Emergency Telephone Number - 01436 67432 Extension: 4372 has been assigned for use in an emergency. Any shipping vessel or the Emergency Services, Tiers 1 thru 3 (inc Mountain Rescue)  may request a cesation of jamming by telephoning this number or using VHF radiosets -call sign: Loch Ewe / Cape Wrath GPS Jamming).

Two planned satnav jamming exercises

1. Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire.
The jammers will be located within 5km of SU 01690 45312 and be active between 2nd July to 11th July inclusive, between 0700 BST and 2000 GMT weekdays only.

2. RAF SpadeDam, Cumbria.
The jammers will be located within 5km of NY 64550 72016 and be active between 10th – 14th September inclusive.

The proposed wattage for both of these exercises is quite high so it may well extend beyond the areas where the broadcast originates.

Like all sessions of jamming reported here the signal will be the L1 carrier that civilian satnavs employ.

Two planned satnav (GPS) jamming exercises Sennybridge Training Area, north of the Brecon Beacons, Wales.

Dates
24-28 September, 2012 inclusive between 0900 -1700 BST
1-5 October 2012 inclusive between 0900 -1700 BST

Area
Multiple land based jammers centred around SN 87747 36765 (N55.017931° W 3.637291°)

Frequencies (all at 24 MHz bandwidth)
1575.42MHz -   used in all car and handheld civilian satnavs
1176.45 MHz –  military frequency only (P-code)
1227.60MHz –   the new frequency designed for SoL (Safety of Life) navigation used by commercial aircraft

Primarily low power transmissions will be employed (10 Watts EIRP) affecting only hill walkers and a few vehicles on the Mynydd Bwlch-y-Groes as there are several rights of way on hill and forest tracks in this area.

However, high power (100 Watts EIRP) transmission are also planned, the exact days these high power transmission will be announced prior to the actual days; these will cause severe disruption over a large area.

The high power jamming will not affect satnav users up to a height of 25 metres AMSL (Above Mean Sea Level) around the UK coastline.

As from 0700GMT today (07102013) GPS Jamming Exercise JOINT WARRIOR (JW) 132 commences across the entire UK1,

Dates: 0700GMT 7 October 2013 to 2359GMT 13 October, 2013

Times: There will be continuous, opportunity and pre-planned events during this period

Location: The jamming events will take place throughout the UK FIR/UIR north of 51 degrees North1.

Type: The jamming will include GPS jamming (denial of service only).

As in previous exercises, Safety of Life operations will at all times take precedence over exercise activities.

1.FIR = Flight Information Region.
In the UK FIR is all airspace below 24,500 feet.  And sub divided into London FIR and Scottish FIR.  The boundary being the 55 deg N.
For the Republic of Ireland it’s called Shannon FIR.    Paris, Amsterdam, Brest, Brussels etc – you get the idea.

UIR = Upper Flight Information Region.
In the UK UIR is all airspace above 24,500 feet.

So in respect of the jamming exercise this will take place over all of the UK North of 51 deg N inc NI and be effective as blanket coverage from ground level to well beyond the stratosphere.

Thanks to Lost Soul for the area explanation

Reposted my original thread from General Forum ( and deleted original ).

The Press & Journal ( Moray ) for today - Saturday 15th March 2014 had an article on the forthcoming Operation  Joint Warrior ( author  Alistair Whitfield ) - this is set to run in various locations in NE and NW Scotland - including Cape Wrath.  Operation dates are 30th March to 11th April 2014.

The article states that an Amphibious Assault is planned for an undisclosed location in NW Scotland and Airborne Landings for another undisclosed location in NE Scotland, along with large scale live fire at Cape Wrath - between the above noted dates.

The article quotes  on page three, third column - 'In order to simulate what would happen in a war, GPS signals will be temporarily jammed during part of the exercise. However, the MOD has said this will be limited to a confined area in the north-west ( sic Scotland I assume ) '

Just a heads up.  GPS disruption aside, please remember to leave out copious quantities of larger for any stray 'Toms'  ;)  if you reside in the area.
