New Techniques & Learning / Magnetic Variation
« on: January 24, 2014, 09:20:55 AM »
Apologies if this is in the wrong part of the forum!

Came across this website whilst reading the news today (news article here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-25841106). The site will give you the current magnetic variation for the co-ordinates you supply it with.

Rather useful, I think!

Go to http://www.geomag.bgs.ac.uk/data_service/models_compass/gma_calc.html to have a play with it yourself.

Found this article you might like to read.  Some people might not like it being on the Torygraph, but there are worse news sources out there!

It's about a group of men who re-measured a hill (Thack Moor) and got it reclassified as a mountain.  Another one asking to be walked up, then :-)

New Member Introductions / Hello!
« on: March 05, 2013, 11:23:42 AM »
Hi all,

Thought I'd say hello as I've just been 'unleashed' on the forum (I promise not to spam).

I'm Mike, I live in Nottingham and I'm an occasional Scout Leader and a Special Constable (boo, hiss, I know).  I would say I'm an 'OK' navigator (well I always find the pub, which is important), but I'm always on the look out for picking up new techniques and trek-craft skills. I have the book and decided to give this site a whirl.

I love hill walking and just had a week up in the Lakes (it didn't rain) and try to get out into Derbyshire as much as possible, though life gets in the way sometimes.

So hello, how are you?

Hobbo.
