Hello, My name is Bill, and I get a 'mite confused' at times.
« on: February 07, 2013, 09:45:20 PM »
Hi, I'm Bill, and I've been walking up and down hills since 1972. I learnt map and compass work in the Army, and did my summer and winter ML ( do they still exist?) in 1995-97. I have found myself recently getting a tad nonchalant with my navigation, and so need to brush up my skills. As a result, at the grand old age of 54 I have purchased a GPS - ( OK Lyle, a GNSS)- a Garmin Oregon 450. I know it looks a lot better than the Military  GPS (a Garmin 12) I used in Canada, but please don't tell me it's cr*p!

Any advice , help with GNSS will be appreciated,

Cheers,

Bill

Hi Bill and welcome to the forum. My name is Barry and I live just below you in Albany, New York. Actually, I only jointed the forum several months ago and recently purchased a Garmin Etrex H and had no idea how they worked until Lyle and a bunch of these forum guys jumped in and helped me live through the ordeal of using it. These guys know what their doing. So, again welcome.

Hi Bill and welcome aboard  :)

Your Oregon 450 is 100 x better than the military version you were using, which is now in the Smithsonian Museum ;)

I suggest you start by checking out the videos in the Video Learning Centre at www.micronavigation.com

Plus download the 6 page article I wrote for Trail Magazine,  you will find this in the Resource Centre.

Hi Bill from the jewel of England, the Lake District:)

We were completely new to satnav before buying the UNM, downloading the PDF files, and this, combined with the brilliant help from members of this forum, set us on the right track.
