Compasses / Declination

Please help me out here, I am having serious trouble getting my head around the adjustable declination scale on the Suunto M3 - just bought one on reading the reviews etc.

When you set the declination scale for your area do I take it that no further maths are needed, even when changing from grid to mag and back again?  Cant quite get my head around this!

Please explain in simple terms, haha

If you have a baseplate compass without rubber feet then a good way to prevent slipping is to put several small dots of fabric glue on the underside  - I got mine from Wilkinsons, leave these dots to dry overnight and then you will have clear, grippy feet on your compass.

N.B.  Be care full where you put the dots as you do not want to cover up any orienting lines etc.

Maps / Own Printed Maps

I cant find reference to this anywhere, if it is here accept my apologies.

 I use Mapyx as my on line mapping and frequently download and laminate maps for where I am going, I keep the OS version tucked away in my rucksack in case of emergencies.  Does anyone else do this and what is the general opinion of this practice.

New Member Introductions / Hello from not so sunny Hayling Island

Just joined the forum and site, looks like it's the biz.  Have already picked up some tips.  I often head up to my playground - Brecon Beacons ( take the boy out of the valleys but you cant take the valleys out of the boy) and wild camp and wander and practice Nav there, but the tips I have come across are amazing, always ready and willing to learn.

Look forward to hearing from you soon, going over to maps now to put up a question on mapping!!
