Emergency & Backup Equipment / Battery Sudden Death
« on: August 20, 2012, 11:35:52 PM »
Don't know if anyone else has experienced this.
Been using lithium batteries in my Garmin 60Cx for a while now.
Get a much longer life from them than normal or rechargeables so that's great.
But I have noticed that they die without warning.
With other types, the battery bars gradually reduced from three to one so it was easy to be ready for the change for a fresh set.
With the lithiums it seems to be three bars and then out of gas and off.
I always have at least one spare set with me so it's not a problem, guessing when it might happen is more tricky.

Latest CW dropped through the door today.
Part 2 of their Get Into Walking feature covers Navigation.
Some good basic stuff clearly explained and tips in there too. But also some strange choices of kit and at least one omission on the subject of bearings that I think many people might find rather crucial. I'm sure most people on here can guess what that might be. If not page 122 is where it's at.
Would be interesting to find out why they omitted it.

Reviews, Suggestions and Advice / The BMC New Hill Walkers Booklet
« on: January 30, 2012, 09:08:01 PM »
Came across this little booklet that The BMC have just published on their web site for free download.
At first glance there seems to be quite a few interesting bits and pieces in it.

Compasses / M&S Compass
« on: December 11, 2011, 10:58:41 PM »
Was out with one of my trainees yesterday doing a recce.
To orientate her map she produced a compass of a type I had never seen before.
Had numerous markings in red on the baseplate, none of which could be easily used for a grid ref.
There was a nice large bubble in the housing too. Needle was still moving fairly ok though.
Turns out it was £5 in M&S.
Suggested that she might like to take it back and get one without a bubble.
I'm going to have a look for myself next time I pass the store.

So... Not just any old compass, it's an M&S compass!

Best Places to Buy / Lithium AA Rechargeable Batteries
« on: November 16, 2011, 02:29:03 PM »
Trying to get hold of some of these to put in my Garmin.
Loads of sites advertise them but when it comes down to they don't have any.
Anyone know where they can be found or are they like the mythical rocking horse stuff?
Cheers

New Member Introductions / Morning All

Something that has been missing for years has appeared from nowhere.
After seeing the book in Trail and getting copy I was stunned.
Everything you could ever want to know in one tome. Add to the mix this site and the unmentionable Shaven Raspberry.
A one stop shop for all things navigational. From the initial posts I'm sure that this whole venture will be a success.
Great job Lyle.
