Navigational Questions & Answers / Re: Aspect of slope!!!
« on: July 17, 2012, 07:09:36 AM »
I think of the aspect of slope bearing as only being able to go straight down the contours. Like a magic ball that can only roll down and across the contours at 90° to them. Rough sketch below but might give an idea?! If you stand on my rough ridge and take a bearing down the balls paths it will be different at different points along the ridge. You can match the bearing up to the actual map with the edge of the compass also crossing the contours at 90°. Confused, sorry!

On courses I usually find a ridge or similar that curves enough so the bearings are very different. Like other aspects of navigation it comes as a 'penny drops' moment after a few goes.

Nice find. Looks useful and about all most people need at time when they are 'unsure' of their position.

Great. I think Im going to put 10 cord locks on a piece of paracord but may get a tally counter to try out as well.

Hi
One quick one.  Does anyone remember years ago you could buy little pacing clicker's that went on the side of your compass?  Anyone sell them anymore?

Hi

Well hopefully anyone who want to pay!! Just starting to work things out but forest is very suited to first time & intermediate navigators. Also going to teach some backpacking & campcraft as well all of which I've done training & supervising DOE Gold groups so hoping people want to pay to learn these skills as well.
Next winter I might try some digital mapping workshops as this seems to be quite popular
Now. Early days but surprisingly no one else doing this stuff in the forest.

Have fun promoting you book.

Hi

Got the book this week & having a good read between looking after toddler son. Setting up to teach navigation next year in the New Forest so keen to see the lesson plans at some point  :)
Hopefully this little group will grow a bit over time & swap some good ideas and experiences.
