Thanks guys :)

My most common mistake is not always asking the right question :o Pete Clinch’s blog and Adventure Lifestyle Blog both give interesting personal recommendations for the use of walking poles, however, really what I am looking for is a professional body, the likes of MLTUK or a sports university for example, which has researched this subject and developed a set of instructions for their correct use?

Reviews, Suggestions and Advice / The correct way to use walking poles
« on: April 01, 2014, 01:33:32 PM »
Recently I was struck by something - I don't know how to use my walking poles correctly.

Now don't get me wrong, I have been using them for years, especially on downhill descents. However, last week a group of youngsters, all from the same school, came kitted with walking poles and I became conscious that I have had no formal training in using poles, being self-taught, when the kids asked me the correct way to use them. Experience has taught me that when I am self-taught in a subject I invariably am missing something. Can somebody point me in the right direction where I can find comprehensive instructions to use them correctly?

Compasses / Re: Silva Expedition

Ian, may I suggest you switch to the Suunto branded compasses? I changed from years of using Silva compasses, the last being an Expedition, to an M3 and have never looked back:)

Hi Locus and welcome :) It is very easy to set up Garmin satnavs for use while abroad, in the setup menu you will see a list of countries and the satnav automatically selects the correct position format. If you get stuck just let me know which model you have.

I am sorry John but you shouldn’t use the word Customer Service with Garmin, as this department used to be part of a covert CIA disinformation unit. I tired exactly the same thing, calling them and found that they were obstructive to the point of being rude. Having failed with my reasonable approach, I trawled the net for a crack to their cards and found one, this solved my problem. Other customers may consider doing this too ;)

I think that the answer is that the diseases have to be present in the environment anyway. Hence areas such as in Pakistan, where some of these diseases are endemic, suffer when floods occur and that this is not the case on the Somerset flood plains where these diseases are rarely, if ever, present.

Even though I served with the British Army I had never sat back to consider why we used different measurements and techniques. In Salisbury we were issued with contour only maps to navigate with and I thought the top Brass were just being awkward - it's obvious now I have read this thread ::)

go for the 62 series Angle of Repose, you won't be disappointed. I use mine every day and it is pretty bulletproof.

I can bear witness to skills fade.

A few years back I was laid up in hospital for a few months and when I returned to work was confined to flying my desk for another couple of months. The first day that I took a group out on the hill, I found myself really having to think about the basics, especially explaining to the youngsters how to convert a bearing taken from my map, into one in the landscape, so much so that when I got back to the centre I dusted off my old copy of Pete Cliffs navigation book to check that I was right.

A former instructor of mine in the army used to tell us that sphagnum moss had antiseptic properties and was good for wounds. Does anyone know if there is any merit in this?

Quite the opposite for me Lyle. Try as I might, soon after starting to read something I find myself skipping text, even if I am really enjoying what I am reading and yet somehow I managed to get my degree doing this, albeit many years ago;) I guess there are no rights or wrongs as reading is similar to learning styles, it's what works for the individual.

Your hide-away sounds perfect Oakleaf. We too live in a cottage with a lengthy track, which being the Lake District, frequently has sections washed away, but no deer stalking as there are too many people ;)

A couple of pointers from my experience in teaching navigation: People's initial pace count is frequently higher than when they relax into their stride and walk naturally, plus, remember to take account of the wind and terrain, it is surprising how much difference it can make.

Hi Firebrand and welcome. You must spend every weekend in the mountains, are you a Munro-bagger?
