General navigational Kit / Re: The Heavy Debate
« on: May 23, 2012, 11:44:14 PM »
I think tea is the psychological glue that binds us together or keeps us going in all sorts of situations.
It's certainly a great companion on any day on the hill.
Thinking back to when my mum died. Her sister was on the way to the hospital but never got there in time. It was down to me to break the news to her. She was in shocked silence until a nurse brought in a pot of tea. Somehow that jogged her back to reality and we were able to talk about what happened.
I often see it at work when the crews have been to a bad job. Tea is always the first priority when they get back. It seems to start the process of getting things in perspective and back to something like normal.
As far as Yorkshire Tea goes, can't beat it when it's made with the right water. I'll be up in York on Saturday so will be looking for a cuppa and a nice fat rascal. :)

Some interesting slides and diagrams in your course Ivo.
Going to have a closer look at it when I get an hour or so to spare.

Satnav (GPS GLONASS COMPASS Galileo) / Re: Garmin eTrex - heads-up!
« on: May 16, 2012, 09:48:39 PM »
My local eBay expert informs me that there has been an extra 10 eTrex H's put up for sale since Monday and the prices are rising.
Probably a sign that some armchair Trail readers, who had stuck the "little yellow thing" they were given as a prezzi into a cupboard, have suddenly realised it might make them a few quid.  :P

The Trail articles have been great so far because they've distilled the key points right down to the "need to know" stuff. They will be an excellent resource to add to this site.
Looking forward to the GPS piece.  Although I've using my Garmin for several years, I know I could be doing much more with it.

That sounds pretty mind boggling if it's true.

Looks very tempting Lyle. Much better than working.
Off to the Yorkshire Peaks end of next week. Wonder if we will have such nice looking tops?

I know Lyle was looking into this whole thing of national standards and current syllabuses not being up to current practice or fit for purpose.
Did you get anywhere with it yet Lyle?

General Discussion / Re: OS Maps & GPS
« on: April 04, 2012, 10:16:34 PM »
Alongside this Reader's Poll in Country Walking was a chart giving the answers to the question, "What do you never go walking without".
44% said Map, 27% said GPS or smartphone, 17% said camera, 12% said other stuff.
OS Map sales might be falling but there would appear to be plenty of people still using them.

Would be interesting to find out if this slump is just in paper maps or does it include the multitude of OS digital maps that that are out there? I certainly tend to buy less paper maps of any brand these days. Much easier to create my own using my digital OS maps.

General navigational Kit / Re: Head Torch & Map use

It's always worth checking anything that says it's waterproof to see exactly what sort of water it's proof against.
Most everyday outdoor torches will only be rated IPX4.
Here's a list of IPX's

Latest edition of Trail dropped through the letterbox this morning.
Part 1 of Lyle's navigation series looks great.
Will be interesting to see how it goes down with the readers.

Creating any sort of ICT based learning/teaching resource can be very time consuming.
I've always found that the minimalist approach produces better results and reduces the production time.
The link below shows how to structure this type of approach.

Using a method like this really gives a tight focus on the relevance of all content.
