Recently we have needed to provide more Etrex handhelds for stundents and with no (little) budget v.diff. So the team have been watching ebay, and colleague snaffled one this weekend, that I think had not been out of the box, for £24!

There is no good reason not to use this technology nowadays in my mind in conjunction with good map and compass skils.

Was that the E-Trex H10, I am after one of those.  Have the original E-Trex but would prefer the H 10 as I am led to believe it locks on better and quicker than the original.

Spot on Grant, these little satnavs are nothing short of a miracle for the price, mine cost £29 on FleaBay

Lyle wrote a great piece about the merits of the unit and what you need to get started on this forum in the Satnav/Satnav Backup

We have used it everywhere from Torridon to the Lakes and it is a fantastic tool.

I am just completing a big feature (seven pages for Trail Magazine), plus 6 accompanying videos, to demonstrate how buying a second-hand Etrex from Ebay, you can access the multi-billion dollar satellite system.

I will be explaining everything from how to connect the satnav to your computer and update its firmware, thru navigating with it, using best practice, down to uploading your routes, tracks and waypoints onto Google Earth.

I am going to post the article and the videos at the Learning Centre, and I have a lot more news about other articles I have written and videos filmed which I will post more about later this week.

Update.

We are so impressed with this satnav, and the fact we cannot afford one of the mapping units, we bought a second one, again off Fleabay, this time for £36. The device still had the protective cover on the screen as it had sat in the owners house and never been used. We bought the second one for a few reasons: as a back up, if for some reason the main one we are using breaks, then we can revert to the spare, also, so we both navigate at the same time and consequently minimise erros that we may individually make, and last but not least, Emma has a new use, she waypoints her car when at the Meadow Hall Shopping Mall ;)
