Satnav Jamming Notices

Lyle Brotherton:
A series of satnav jamming exercises are planned for various locations in East Anglia and off-shore coastline in February and March 2013 and potentially will significantly disrupt civilian satnavs used in these.

Location: Multiple jammers will be deployed within a 5km radius of Harling Drove, Thetford Forest Park, Norfolk (Stanford training Area)

Dates: 11-15 February 2013 (Inclusive).

Frequency: A 24 MHz band centred around 1575.42MHz L1 – Civilian Carrier.

Total Power: Up to 10 Watts EIRP.

Location: Multiple locations off the coast of East Anglia, the area is bounded, marked with bouys, the area bounded is:

 •         51.916667°N 1.453745°E  (51° 55.0’N  1°27.2’E)

•         51.883607°N 1.397795°E  (51° 53.0’N  1°23.9’E)

•         51.916667°N 1.421994°E  (51° 55.0’N  1°25.3’E)

Dates: 25-26 February 2013 (Inclusive)
          28 February- 1 March 2013 (Inclusive)

Times: Intermittently for a 90 minute period in each time slot 0930-1200 GMT and 1400-1630 GMT.

Frequency: 24 MHz bands centred around 1575.42MHz L1 – Civilian Carrier.

Total Power: 0.0005 Watts ERP maximum so as not to effect vessels outside the area bounded by the co-ordinates above or aircraft flying above 2500ft.

Location Sculthorpe Airfield, Fakenham, East Anglia

Dates:   25th- 29th March 2013 (Inclusive)

Times: 0700 -1700 BST.

Location: A single  of SINGLE jammer jammers will be deployed within a 2km radius of Turbo Raod, Sculthorpe Airfield

Frequency: A 20 MHz band centred around 1 575.42MHz L1 – Civilian Carrier.

Power: Up to 0.3 Watts EIRP (300mW).

Jammers: Omni-directional jammers radiating CW.

Lyle Brotherton:
Five days of airborne satnav (GPS) jamming exercises are planned for the Atlantic Ocean to the west of Benbecula, an island of the Outer Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland, are reported here as there is potential to affect ground satnav receivers.

Location: Jamming aircraft will fly at 1066 metres AMSL (Above Mean Sea Level) along a ground track based on the Benbecula (BEN) VOR 275° radial. The aircraft track will extend from 10nm (Nautical Miles) west of the BEN VOR to 60nm west of the BEN VOR

Dates: 8-12 February 2013 (Inclusive).

Times: 1000-1200 GMT and 1400-1600 GMT daily

Frequency: A 24 MHz band centred around 1227.60MHz and 1575.42MHz (Civilian and Military satnav frequencies)

Affected areas: Interference prediction plots for a Civilian satnav receivers from 50 metres and above AMSL with possible interference below this height.

Notes
1. Continuous jamming will be restricted 12 mins max per fly-past
2. There will be a minimum of 5 mins interval between each fly-past
3. Jamming will only be transmitted in a westerly direction away from the mainland

Lyle Brotherton:
There are two planned GPS Jamming Exercises to take place at the following locations:

RAF Spadeadam in Cumbria

Dates: 10 to 14 of June 2013 inclusive

Times: 0800-1600 GMT.

Location of MULTIPLE jammers: Land based within 5km of N55° 04.000’ W002° 34.000’

Frequency: 24 MHz bands centred around 1227.60 (GPS L2) and 1575.42MHz (GPS L1)

Total Power: Up to 10 Watts EIRP

Jammers: Directional jammers radiating CW, BPSK and noise modulation

Sennybridge Training Area in Wales

Dates: 8 to 12 July and 15 to 19 of July 2013 inclusive

Times: 0700-1700 GMT

Location of MULTIPLE jammers: Land based within 5km of N52° 00.881’ W003° 38.518’ (SN873365 – Dixie’s Corner)

Frequency: 24 MHz bands centred around 1176.45MHz (GPS L5/Galileo E5a), 1227.60MHz (GPS L2) and 1575.42MHz (GPS/Galileo L1)

Total Power: Up to 10 Watts EIRP

Jammers: Directional jammers radiating CW, BPSK and noise modulation.

Lyle Brotherton:
As from 0700GMT today (07102013) GPS Jamming Exercise JOINT WARRIOR (JW) 132 commences across the entire UK1,

Dates: 0700GMT 7 October 2013 to 2359GMT 13 October, 2013

Times: There will be continuous, opportunity and pre-planned events during this period

Location: The jamming events will take place throughout the UK FIR/UIR north of 51 degrees North1.

Type: The jamming will include GPS jamming (denial of service only).

As in previous exercises, Safety of Life operations will at all times take precedence over exercise activities.

1.FIR = Flight Information Region.
In the UK FIR is all airspace below 24,500 feet.  And sub divided into London FIR and Scottish FIR.  The boundary being the 55 deg N.
For the Republic of Ireland it’s called Shannon FIR.    Paris, Amsterdam, Brest, Brussels etc – you get the idea.

UIR = Upper Flight Information Region.
In the UK UIR is all airspace above 24,500 feet.

So in respect of the jamming exercise this will take place over all of the UK North of 51 deg N inc NI and be effective as blanket coverage from ground level to well beyond the stratosphere.

Thanks to Lost Soul for the area explanation

Reposted my original thread from General Forum ( and deleted original ).

The Press & Journal ( Moray ) for today - Saturday 15th March 2014 had an article on the forthcoming Operation  Joint Warrior ( author  Alistair Whitfield ) - this is set to run in various locations in NE and NW Scotland - including Cape Wrath.  Operation dates are 30th March to 11th April 2014.

The article states that an Amphibious Assault is planned for an undisclosed location in NW Scotland and Airborne Landings for another undisclosed location in NE Scotland, along with large scale live fire at Cape Wrath - between the above noted dates.

The article quotes  on page three, third column - 'In order to simulate what would happen in a war, GPS signals will be temporarily jammed during part of the exercise. However, the MOD has said this will be limited to a confined area in the north-west ( sic Scotland I assume ) '

Just a heads up.  GPS disruption aside, please remember to leave out copious quantities of larger for any stray 'Toms'  ;)  if you reside in the area.
