New Videos
« on: April 17, 2012, 08:18:45 AM »
The first batch of new videos has been uploaded to the Learning Centre in the Back 2 Basics and The Difficult Stuff sections

These were filmed for Trail Magazine, as part of large three part series I have written for them. part 1 was published in the April 2012 issue and I will be loading the PDF files for viewing on this site on Friday this week.

Plus, articles written for other magazines, including specialist journals for mountain rescue, will be made available on this site.

Really good, I think your more relaxed style works well - your first few were a bit SMA'ish ;) but still very good.

Notice only one satnav video, presume more planned?

Very helpful, especially the pacing and timing videos. Your delivery style is straight forward and conveys each technique very clearly.

My vote for more satnav videos please.

A perfectly timed question Boys to which there is a longer answer and a shorter answer:

Longer answer
A combination of events has led to me deciding to shoot a complete series of videos, aimed at both introducing satnav to complete beginners to the technology and establishing best practice for those already familiar with it.

Hugh made a fascinating post in the OS Maps & GPS thread in General Discussions, and of course is perfectly correct in his observation. Equally, your reply Callum was spot-on, in that for youngsters handheld computing technology, in the form of smart phones, has already become ubiquitous.

Your comments prompted me to see just how much I could access the full capabilities of satnav, using a rugged, reliable and well specified satnav model, including integration with Ordnance Survey digital mapping plus sharing waypoints, tracks and routes with friends and colleagues for.

I selected a model, worked out exactly the hardware required for it to interface with my computer and then bid for these on eBay – everything I needed cost me £41.27 delivered to my door and I used free on-line digital mapping programs; remarkable value!

I have written a large seven page article for Trail Magazine (June 2012 issue) detailing all of this and to augment the feature I am filming series videos to help people, in small bite-sized chunks of information, become proficient users of this technology.

I must say it has been a really exciting challenge and reaffirms my conviction that this multi-billion navigational technology can be very accessable and immensely useful to everybody.

I will be posting the entire article on the website 1 month after publication in the magazine. (Plus I have now obtained permission from Trail and other journals I have written articles for to reproduce them on this website).

Shorter answer
A series 7 satnav videos will be uploaded May 18 this year.

that is great, saves me a lot of time downloading PDF's and printing the articles. Will there be more info in general on a topic than in the UNM?

Maybe something on magnetic variation too Lyle, it is amazing just how often this subject crops up, and how confusing it appears to new and experienced navigators alike.

The Trail articles have been great so far because they've distilled the key points right down to the "need to know" stuff. They will be an excellent resource to add to this site.
Looking forward to the GPS piece.  Although I've using my Garmin for several years, I know I could be doing much more with it.

Trail Magazine has started to upload the six videos I have made about how to use an eTrex H handheld satnav (GPS).

My reasoning for selecting this device are:

* Low cost of entry to use this technology
* Robustness and ruggedness of the device – waterproof and drop-proof
* Performance in terms of accuracy and battery life
* Simplicity in operation
* Simple interface with Google Earth and other GIS

They have uploaded numbers 2 & 3 first with the rest following this week.

Let me know if they are helpful, what extra you would like to see please?

Having used nothing but the Etrex H for the last six months I thought we had got is completely sussed, but as always Lyle, your article showed us there were still things to learn.

We have been contemplating upgrading and spending the hundreds of pounds to get a mapping satnav with maps, but now have decided that with our Etrexs and the Aqua3 waterproof maps there is no need. I think using them this way also keeps your map and compass skills fresh.

Your best videos yet, look forward to seeing the other four.

Also came to same conclusing for training, you do not need a map in the GPS, you need a map en practising with that map I value more than using it on a GPS. The capabilities resulting from the synergy between the GPS and the paper map has a lot of benefits.

Best yet Lyle, really outstanding :)

We are using them in the classroom, with our whiteboards, to introduce the kids to satnav basics.

Very good Lyle, thanks.
The Trackback one in particular, inspired me to seek this feature on my 62 which takes some finding! Not in the manual as far as I can see (there's your next book, a decent manual :))

Its > Track Manager > Current Track> View Map - You then see the Tracback button and press enter.

My pleasure Dave,

This week I will be adding a new video of how to upload & download Waypoints/Tracks/Routes to and from handheld satnavs and computer digital mapping.

Poor manuals
Garmin write their first proof instruction manuals in Ladakhi, which is an ancient Western Archaic Tibetan dialect that includes Balti and Purik. Batteries are scarce commodity in this region and the copyrighter does a remarkable job without them. The problem arises I believe with the interpretation of these manuals into English ;)

I guess in part it is why forums, such as this, exist.

The best manufacturer manual I have read come from a small British firm called Satmap, who supply the Active 10+, a very credible and intuitive to use handheld satnav.
