Maps
« on: October 14, 2011, 05:06:51 PM »
In my local area there are several permanent Orienteering Courses, these include online maps that can be printed off.  I find these are a great help teaching basic map and compass work.
As they are in safe areas and show all kinds of features that you can navigate to, i.e, Boulders, gullies, earth banks etc.

Hi Callum

Orienteering maps are an art form all of there own. Scales used are 1.7500, 1.10000 and 1.15000. They show a lot more detail but they show different info to other maps such as OS maps.

The maps are produced by specially trained people, it is quite an art. I used to supply 1.10000 digital to someone who drew orienteering  maps and he would completely redraw his maps and they were works of art.

Orienteering is a great way to polish your nav skills.
