OS 229 Forest / Woodland
« on: March 05, 2015, 07:38:16 PM »
On the OS map 229 Thetford Forest and the Brecks there are two different shades of green, for forested areas.  Could someone please explain the difference between the two.  I have looked on the OS website but don't seem to be able to find an explanation.  Thanks

Claire

I don't have a copy of Explorer 229 but I've had a look at the area on my Grough software. Follow the A1065 running southwest out of Brandon to TL 76456 84863. On the south side of the road, the forest is bounded by an orange border which indicates that it is access land where you can wander at will. On the north side of the road the green is of a slightly different tint and lacks an orange border which tells you that it is not access land and you are only permitted to enter it using a public right of way.

Have a look at the map key again and you will see that the difference is shown under the general heading of 'Access land'.

Hope that this helps!

I should have mentioned that on Explorer maps, access land, like public rights of way, is only shown on maps of England and Wales because the law in Scotland is different. But as the Ordnance Survey uses a standard key relevant to each of its map series, the information about access land and public rights of way also appears on the key to maps covering Scotland.

Access land is not depicted on Landranger maps of England and Wales, but public rights of way are.

Hugh, many thanks for the reply.  I was on the right track with the boundary access, the colour difference's with the forestry confused me. I thought they would have been the same but I guess it's easier to see which is access Land.

Thanks Claire
