Old rear charts for Mapman TV program
« on: October 17, 2011, 12:18:12 AM »
A couple of years ago I was asked to digitally scan some charts that are kept by the Admiralty office in Portsmouth for the TV program Mapman.

These charts were originals, very rear and priceless. It was a great to work with these charts although a bit daunting putting them through the large format scanner which had the habit of shredding old documents.

Edmund Halley 1702

Edmund Halley c1730

Jacobz Theunis c1666 There is not much info about dear Jacobz other than the National Maritime Museum have 5 of his charts but non of them of the English Coast line.

Hendrick Doncker c1665 - this is a very famous image now and you can even buy it as a poster.

Hendrick Doncker was a Dutch book maker and was commissioned to draw this chart. The Scottish commissioned Donker to draw this map. Why?

Alexis Hubert Jaillot c1691

Cornelis Dankerts

Jacques Nicholas Bellin

Johannes Van Keulen

Johannes Van Keulen 1681

Pieter Goos

"We do not belong to those who only get their thought from books, or at the prompting of books - it is our custom to think in the open air, walking, leaping, climbing or dancing, of lonesome mountains by preference, or close to the sea, where even the paths become thoughtful." Friedrich Nietzsche
